Animal Control Officer

Department: Police Department
Location: Glenpool, OK

Experience Required: None

Minimum Education Requirements: High School diploma/GED

Direct Supervisor: Chief of Police

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Primary Work Location: Outdoors

Physical requirements: Must be physically fit; employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, crouch, climb, kneel, and run. This employee must be able to regularly lift or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

Certification: Possession of a valid driver’s license, certified through the Animal Control Academy


Job Summary: The Animal Control Officer is to protect public health and safety through enforcement of City and State animal control laws. Enforce city ordinances and state laws regarding animal violations and assist in the development of community problem solving techniques regarding nuisance animals.


Essential Job Functions

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:

  1. Patrol city limits and receive and respond to animal complaints, including animals at large, stray, vicious, abandoned, nuisance or abused.
  2. Monitor violations of animal control city ordinances and state laws.
  3. Apprehend stray or at large animals for impoundment.
  4. Clean and sanitize the shelter kennels, cages, and dishes.
  5. Care for shelter animals.
  6. Facilitate the adoption of shelter animals.
  7. Apprehend diseased or injured animals.
  8. Determine ownership of animals at large.
  9. Handle vicious animals or displeased citizens while utilizing officer safety.
  10. Offer suggestions to animal owners to aid in compliance with laws and ordinances.
  11. Investigate incidences of animal cruelty, dog bites, and dog attacks.
  12. Prepare reports and enter data into computer relating to animal incidents.
  13. Issue warnings and contacts officers if citations need to be issued.
  14. Testify in court if needed.
  15. Pick up animals to be euthanized.
  16. Remove dead animals from roadways and citizens property.
  17. Assist dispatch/jailers as required.
  18. Perform related tasks as required.

Knowledge

  • Principles and practices of effective customer service.
